Unpopular opinion: I cleaned focus screens with canned air for 6 years until a guy in Tucson showed me the oil mist
He held my flashlight at an angle across a 'clean' screen from a Nikon FM2 and every speck I thought I'd blown off was actually propellant residue baked onto the glass, which is why my reinstall jobs kept coming back with the same dust complaints.

Wait, so the canned air itself was the problem the whole time? I always figured the residue thing was mostly about holding the can at a weird angle and getting that cold spray, not something that happens on every normal use. Because if plain old canned air is leaving oil mist on the glass every single time, then half the repair guys I know have been wrecking screens for years without knowing it. The flashlight trick makes sense though, since you can't see that thin film in normal light, you just wonder why the dust keeps coming back. So was it the brand of canned air, or does this happen with any of them?
