Serious question, did I mess up by turning down a $600 CLA on a Rolleiflex last Tuesday?
I had a customer walk into my shop here in Boise with a 2.8F that had a stuck shutter and fungus creeping on the taking lens, and I quoted him $600 for a full tear down and relube. He said thanks but no thanks and walked out, and honestly I felt a little relieved because that weekend I had 4 other jobs stacked up and my bench was a mess. Then a buddy who runs a shop in Portland told me he gets $850 for the same job all day and now I'm second guessing my whole pricing sheet. Do you guys charge more for the 2.8 models or am I just leaving money on the table out here?
Portland prices are not Boise prices and that is the part people keep missing. Your buddy charges $850 because his rent is three times yours and there are probably five other guys within an hour of him doing the same work. A 2.8F with fungus on the taking lens is also a whole different animal than just a stuck shutter, because now you are looking at possibly replacing that lens element or at least a deep clean that may not even save the coating. Six hundred for a tear down, relube, and fungus work on a 2.8 sounds about right for your market, maybe even a touch high for a walk in customer. Raising your sheet to match a guy in a bigger city with more demand is how you end up with an empty bench and no walk in traffic. You did not mess up, you priced for where you actually are.
