Overheard a guy at the shop say "SD cards are immortal"...

I was cleaning out a box of old parts the other day and found a 256MB SD card from like 2005. Plugged it into my reader just for laughs and it wouldn't read at all. Tried three different readers and nothing. Guy next to me goes "oh those things last forever" and I about laughed. I had a Nikon D70 come in last month where a bad card slot ate the whole contact set. These things fail all the time. Anyone else here had a card just die on them mid-job?

Did you ever figure out what actually killed that Sandisk, or was it just a random failure with no warning signs? Because I've got cards that are ten years old and still going strong, and others that died after a dozen uses. Feels like there's no rhyme or reason to which ones crap out.

Had a Sandisk 32GB card die on me mid-shoot at a wedding once. Got about 400 shots on it and the camera just locked up. Pulled it out and the contacts looked fine but nothing would read it. Ended up using PhotoRec to pull the files off after about an hour of messing with it. Since then I swap cards every two years max and keep spares in those little waterproof cases.
