My uncle said to always heat up the shutter assembly on an old Nikon before cleaning, and I just wrecked a job

He's a retired repair guy and swore by using a hair dryer on low for a minute to loosen old grease. I tried it on a Nikon FM2 that came in last Tuesday, and the heat warped a tiny plastic gear inside. The whole shutter timing is off now. Some folks say gentle heat is fine, others say never apply any heat to those old parts. Has anyone else had a shutter repair go wrong from a cleaning tip like that?

Yeah, that plastic gets brittle. I just use a tiny bit of lighter fluid on a swab now, no heat.

Honestly @lilyt90, that's how most old tech ends up breaking these days.
