Had to choose between a full CLA or just a shutter fix on a Pentax K1000 last week.

The customer wanted it cheap, so I went with the shutter job, but now the film advance is sticking and I have to redo the whole thing. Has anyone else had a simple fix turn into a bigger headache because you skipped the full service?

Actually, skipping the full CLA was the right call for a budget repair. You addressed the customer's main issue and saved them money. Sometimes a second problem pops up later, but that doesn't mean your initial choice was wrong. It just means cameras are old and things wear out.

Is it really that big of a deal though? The customer got what they asked for, a cheap fix. Old cameras break, it's just what they do. Maybe the advance was already on its way out and your work just happened to line up with it failing. Could just be bad luck, not a wrong choice.

Ugh that's the worst. @joel280 has a point about budget fixes, but man, doesn't it feel like the camera knows? I've had a sticky advance lever on an old Spotmatic that was totally fine until I messed with the shutter speeds. Once you disturb one old, gummed-up part, it's like the whole thing decides to fall apart. Do you think the advance issue was related to your shutter work, or just real bad timing?

Ever wonder if the shutter fix shook something loose in the advance mechanism?
