Bought a $120 ultrasonic cleaner for shutter assemblies and my first batch came out worse
I picked up a used ultrasonic cleaner on eBay for $120 about two months ago. Everyone on forums swears by them for cleaning shutter blades and mirror boxes. First run I did was a Nikon FM2 shutter that had oily blades. I used plain water with a drop of dish soap and ran it for 5 minutes at 60C. When I pulled the assembly out, the blades were clean but two of them had come apart at the rivets. Turns out the heat and vibration loosened the stake points. I went back and read the manual and it says 40C max for delicate work. Now I run it at 35C for 2 minutes with a proper cleaning solution and it works great. Has anyone else cooked a shutter assembly in one of these? What temp and time are you running?
