A retired press photographer made me rethink my whole soldering setup
Last week a guy dropped off an old Nikon F2 for a shutter rebuild, and while he waited we got to talking about repair benches. He mentioned he never uses a fume extractor, just an open window and a desk fan, and said I was overcomplicating things with my fancy setup. I laughed it off at first, but then he showed me a splice he did on a broken wire that was cleaner than anything I've ever done, using just a $15 iron and rosin core solder. Got me wondering if I've been chasing gear instead of technique, so has anyone else found that simpler tools actually improved their work?
