A guy at the parts counter in Fresno told me to stop reusing JIS screws, and he was right
He said it flat out while I was buying a replacement set: "You keep pulling those old screws and one day the head rounds off and you're drilling." I had been reusing the same JIS screws on every CLA for probably two years, just wiping them down and threading them back in. What I did not think about was how the heads wear a little each time a driver bites into them, and after enough cycles they get soft. Last month I had a Minolta body on the bench and one screw stripped right in the mount, which turned a 40 minute job into two hours with a drill and a lot of cursing. Now I keep a small bin of fresh JIS screws in the common sizes and swap them out any time the head looks even a little chewed. Costs me maybe 15 cents a screw and saves me a headache. Curious if anyone else here tosses old screws or if you all just keep running them until they fail.
