Watching a finish carpenter in Dayton fit a scribe made me rethink how I measure openings
Three years back I was helping hang doors on a remodel in Dayton and the finish guy kept his tape in his pouch most of the morning. I asked why he wasn't measuring and he said he measures the opening once, then fits everything to the actual gap with a scribe and a block plane. I'd been cutting every door to a number off the tape, and my gaps were all over the place, some tight at the top and wide at the bottom. He pulled out a 6 inch piece of scrap with a pencil line and showed me how a bevel gauge and a scribe catch wall lean that a tape just can't. Now when I fit face frames on old houses I check the gaps with a scribe first, and I'm doing way less shimming and trimming. Curious if anyone here still measures every opening twice or if you've gone over to fitting to the actual space.
