Saw a 1920s kitchen hutch at an estate sale in Richmond last weekend, and the drawer joinery stopped me cold
I was at this estate sale in Richmond on Saturday and they had a built-in hutch from around 1925 that I could not walk away from. The drawer sides were maybe 5/16 thick and cut with what looked like a half blind dovetail, but the pins were so thin I almost missed them. What got me was the way the bottom of the upper cabinet was let into the sides with a dado, no nails anywhere. I have been running plywood boxes for so long that seeing real hardwood drawers that still slide smooth after 100 years made me feel like I am cutting corners. Anyone here still cutting their own drawer sides by hand, or is that just a weekend hobby thing now?
