Old timer told me to stop using pocket screws for face frames - now I'm second guessing everything

This 60 year old cabinetmaker I met at a job site last month said pocket screws weaken the joints over time and insisted I switch to dowel joinery. I brushed him off but then noticed a client's 5 year old face frame starting to separate at the corners. Am I wrong to trust pocket screws for face frames or is the old school glue and dowel method actually better long term?

Ugh that's rough. I really feel for you doubting your whole approach now.

Five years isn't that old though.
