I finally changed my mind about prefinished plywood after a job in Columbus
I used to be all about finishing my own plywood on site. Sanding, staining, sealing, all of it. But last spring I had a kitchen job where the homeowner insisted on prefinished maple plywood because they saw it at a showroom. I fought it for a week, figured the edges would look cheap and the finish would be too thin. When I started cutting it, though, the factory coating held up way better than my field finish ever did. No sanding dust in the cabinets, no waiting two days for poly to cure, and the edges actually matched once I used the iron-on veneer tape that came with it. My contact, this older guy named Pete who runs a shop just outside Columbus, told me straight up: "You're not a finishing factory, your time is worth more in the assembly." That stuck with me, because he was right. The job took 6 fewer days than my usual estimate, and the customer was happier since no brush marks. Has anyone else switched to prefinished and gone back, or is it only me who waited this long to see the light?

Pete's got it half right, but prefinished isn't always thinner, some factory coats beat poly.
