I switched my pin backs from rubber to metal and lost sales, here's the weird before and after
I run a small pin press out of my garage in Reno and for about 8 months I used the standard black rubber clutch backs on everything. Last month I finally caved and bought 500 metal butterfly backs because a guy at a craft fair in Sparks told me they feel more premium. Big mistake for my setup, at least. The before was simple: rubber backs press on fast, they stay put, and nobody ever complained. The after? The metal backs take me about twice as long to load into the baggies because they slip around, and I had 6 people message me saying the pins flipped over on their jackets and the sharp edges poked them. I went back and looked at my sales sheet for the two weekends before and after, and I actually did $140 less with the metal backs even though I charged the same $4 per pin. It turns out the rubber clutch is just more forgiving for casual wear. So yeah, I disagree with the popular take that metal backs are always the upgrade. Anyone else find that the cheaper backs actually hold better on denim or canvas jackets?
