Appreciation post: the $180 badger hair brush I swore was a scam, until I counted my wasted blanks
I make pinback buttons as a side thing, mostly band merch and small runs for craft fairs, and I used to press with the cheapest brushes and cloths I could find. A guy at a show in Akron told me to buy a real badger hair brush for cleaning my dies and cutting table, and I laughed at him because it was $180 and who spends that on a brush. Then I did the math on my own scrap pile: I was tossing about 15 to 20 ruined blanks a week from dust and stray fibers, which is roughly $40 down the drain every seven days. I bought the brush out of spite more than anything, and within three weeks my reject pile dropped to almost nothing. That is around $120 a month I was basically setting on fire, so the brush paid for itself before the end of the second month. Now I want to know what dumb little tool you all use that actually cut your waste, because I clearly need to hear it from someone else before I buy it.
Fifteen to twenty blanks a week sounds like a lot for just dust and fibers, are you sure the brush is what fixed it and not just you paying more attention? I've bought "upgrades" before that felt great for a month mostly because I was babying the thing. Not saying you're wrong, just hard to trust three weeks of data.
