My 20 year old Toledo scale finally quit mid rush, and a $4 part got me back on the block
Last Saturday the dial on my old Toledo scale froze right in the middle of a 60 pound grind order, and I had to eyeball the last few trays for a customer who was already waiting. I popped the back off and found the rack and pinion gear had a chipped tooth, so I called a repair shop in Springfield and they quoted me $180 plus a week without it. Ended up ordering a replacement gear off an old parts site for $4, and it slid right in after about an hour of fiddling with the calibration screw. Weighed out a test batch against my backup digital and it was dead on. Anyone else keeping old mechanical scales alive, or am I the last guy fighting this fight?

Check the pivot points on that rack before you button it back up. The chipped tooth is usually a symptom, not the cause. A worn bushing lets the gear ride crooked and it snaps a tooth under load. Grease it with white lithium, not WD40. Those old Toledos will outlast both of us if you keep the gears clean.
