Warning about using the wrong primer on a textured wall

I was painting a client's living room in Austin last month and the wall had this weird, bumpy texture. I used a regular primer to save time, but the paint started peeling after just two days. I had to sand everything down, buy a special bonding primer, and start over, which cost me an extra $80 and a whole weekend. Has anyone else found a good primer for heavy knockdown texture?

Honestly, is peeling paint really that big of a deal after just two days? Sometimes paint needs more time to fully cure, especially in humid weather. I've used regular primer on textured walls before and it turned out fine, no extra steps needed. Maybe it was a bad batch of paint or the wall wasn't clean.

Oh man, that reminds me of when I tried to paint over these old paneled walls in my grandma's basement. I thought I could just use leftover flat paint from my bathroom and it would stick. Two days later the whole thing looked like a snake shedding its skin. I ended up having to scrape it all off with a putty knife while my cat kept batting at the paint chips. It was a mess. So yeah, I feel your pain on the texture problem.

I used to cut corners with regular primer on texture too. A popcorn ceiling job last year changed my mind when the whole thing flaked off in sheets. The special bonding stuff has extra glue that grabs onto uneven surfaces.
