Warning about using 2x4s for a load-bearing wall in a garage conversion

I had to choose between 2x4s or 2x6s for a new wall in my Denver garage project, and I went with the cheaper 2x4s. The inspector flagged it because the span was over 10 feet, so I had to tear it out and rebuild with 2x6s, costing me an extra $300 and a full weekend. Has anyone else run into this with a local code they didn't know about?
