TIL a guy at the lumber yard in Boise talked me out of cedar for my planter boxes
I went in last Saturday to grab 2x6 cedar boards like I always do, and the guy cutting stock asked what they were for. When I said planter boxes, he said cedar rots faster than people think when it stays wet in soil, and pointed me at plain fir with a liner. I figured he was just trying to sell me whatever was cheap that day, but he walked me out to his own truck bed box he built 4 years ago. The fir still looked solid while the cedar trim on the same box was soft and gray. So now I line all my boxes and skip cedar, but I'm curious if anyone here has had the same thing happen or if he just got lucky with his build.
