The average house built in 1950 had less than 1,000 square feet
I was looking at some old blueprints from a job we did last month in a 1950s neighborhood, and it hit me how small those homes really were. We were painting a 950 square foot ranch and the owner kept apologizing for the size, but honestly it felt perfectly livable. I looked it up later and saw the average new home in 2023 is over 2,400 square feet. Has anyone else noticed how much our expectations for space have changed over the decades?

Nah man, bigger just means more junk to fill it with.

So true. A bigger space just means buying more random stuff to fill the dead spots.
