Rant: my buddy who frames houses talked me out of the open floor plan and I think he's full of it
My friend Dave has been framing houses outside Kansas City for 19 years and when I showed him my plans for a 900 square foot addition last month, he told me to keep one wall in the middle and skip the big open room. He said every open plan he's framed ends up with a beam that costs $2,400 and a family that can hear the TV from the kitchen. I get his point but I keep thinking about how everyone I know loves their wide open living space. Dave's argument is that walls let you heat and cool zones and you don't need to pay for a steel beam. He also said nobody asks him to take walls out to make rooms feel cozier. Am I nuts for still wanting the open layout, or is he just old school on this one?
