My contractor buddy in Denver said 'a perfect finish hides a bad frame' and it made me question my whole approach.

He argued that obsessing over flawless drywall mud is pointless if the studs behind it are out of plumb by half an inch, which shifted my focus from surface details to structural integrity first.

That line about a perfect finish hiding a bad frame hits hard. It's like @wyatt_fox68 said with the tile, you can polish the surface all you want but the core problem is still there. I see this everywhere now, from people fixing old cars with just a new paint job to companies rolling out fancy new logos while their service is still broken. Why do we keep falling for the shiny surface instead of doing the hard work on the foundation first?

My uncle's kitchen remodel in Phoenix taught me the same thing. We spent weeks on tile only to find the whole wall behind it was out of square.
