I finally stopped using free design templates after a client disaster
I was at a coffee shop in Austin last spring and showed a mockup to a freelance friend who spotted the template source right away... she said it made me look lazy. Has anyone else had a client call them out for using something off the shelf?

Tbh that's rough but honestly valid. Clients are paying for originality and they can usually spot the stock stuff pretty fast. Once they see something they've seen before, it totally kills trust in your work. Ngl sometimes templates work fine for internal stuff but for client work it's risky unless you heavily customize it. Learned that one the hard way myself.

Had a buddy who tried to save time on a logo project using a template he found online (you know, one of those vector packs). Client loved the initial mockups, then reverse image searched it and found the exact same shapes (just recolored) on a dozen other sites. He lost the gig and had to refund the deposit, plus his reputation took a hit. Totally agree with @ray210 here, trust is everything in this game and once it's gone it's really hard to get back.
