I finally got the old drafting table from my uncle's garage set up in my place.

Spent a whole Saturday cleaning 20 years of dust off it and leveling the board, which is still perfect. It felt good to sketch a site plan with a pencil and a triangle again instead of just clicking around. Do you still use any of your old physical tools, or is it all digital now?

My dad's old K&E slide rule is still in my desk drawer. I pull it out sometimes when I'm stuck on a problem, just to run the numbers by hand. The physical act of setting the scales forces me to slow down and really see the math. It's weird how a different tool can unlock a different part of your brain. The answer was usually in my head already, but my hands needed to find it first.

That part about your hands needing to find the answer first really hits home. I get the same feeling when I use a pen and paper to plan my week instead of my phone calendar. Something about the ink on paper makes my thoughts line up differently, and I spot problems I'd just scroll past on a screen.

Oh man, that's so true. It's like our brains get stuck on a single track with digital tools. Troycarter's slide rule example is perfect for that. I wonder if it's because physical stuff gives our body a job to do, which frees up the mental space that was being used just to operate the app or software. Do you find some tasks are just permanently better on paper?
