I drew my kitchen cabinets at full scale on kraft paper for 2 hours and caught a 3 inch mistake
Everybody wants to skip straight to building, but I spent 2 hours last Saturday taping 18 inch kraft paper to my kitchen floor and drawing the whole cabinet run at 1:1. I marked the fridge, the drawers, the counter overhang, all of it with a Sharpie. Turns out my plan had the dishwasher door hitting the corner of the island with only 3 inches of clearance. On paper at 1/2 scale it looked totally fine. I moved the sink over 6 inches and saved myself a $400 cabinet order and a week of rework. Do you all mock up at full scale before you cut anything, or is that just me being extra?

The part about a 1/2 scale drawing looking totally fine is the thing that gets people. At half scale, 3 inches of clearance is only 1.5 inches on the paper, so it hides right in the line thickness of your Sharpie. I do the same full scale trick but with blue tape on the floor instead of paper, mostly because tape won't slide when the dog runs through. One thing worth checking while you're down there: tape the dishwasher door open at 90 degrees, not just closed. The door swings past the cabinet face when it drops, so the spot that looks clear closed can still clip the island.
