Did my kitchen layout actually get worse after the 2021 remodel?
I redid my kitchen in Denver 3 years ago, opened up a wall between the dining room and the counter. Now I'm wondering if I just traded one problem for another. Before, I had a U shape with 12 feet of counter space, now I've got an L shape with 8 feet. Has anyone else regretted opening up a space because you lost too much work surface?

Did you really lose that much counter space just by changing the shape? I used to think open floor plans were always better, but watching a friend struggle with their chopped up L-shaped kitchen made me realize how much you give up. Now I'd pick a good U shape over an open L any day.

@gavin928 that's a good point. I remember reading something from a kitchen designer once who said U shaped kitchens give you way more usable counter space even if they look smaller. Something about how corners in L shapes turn into dead zones where you can't reach anything without stretching. I've seen friends lose like 3 feet of usable space because they couldn't put anything in the corner where the counters meet. I'd take function over looks every time too.
