An architect in Portland showed me why I was spacing deck boards wrong
Had a guy stop by my job site last summer, pointed at my 2x6 deck and said my gaps were too tight for the Pacific Northwest rain. He was right, I had them at 1/8 inch and they needed 3/16 to drain properly. Has anyone else had a random passerby give you a tip that totally changed your build?

Man that's a solid tip right there. I had a similar thing happen when a retired carpenter walked by my fence build and told me to use three nails per post instead of two for the pickets. Saved me from a sagging mess a year later. It's crazy how the little details like drainage gaps can make or break a deck in a wet climate. Props to that architect for stopping and sharing that wisdom.

Three nails per post sounds like one of those things you just assume is fine until someone points it out. Did that carpenter mention if the spacing mattered for the picket nails, like keeping them staggered instead of stacked in a line? Always curious how much small adjustments like that actually change how long the fence holds up under wind and weather.
