Am I the only one who thought a standard 2x4 was actually two inches by four inches?
Found out in a lumberyard pamphlet they're only 1.5 by 3.5 inches after drying and planing. Does that mess with anyone else's plans when they're sketching things out?

My first bookshelf project was off by a full inch on every shelf. It feels like a weird hidden tax on new builders. You really have to learn it the hard way.

Right? It's not just the 2x4s either, it's all the dimensional lumber. I had to re-cut a whole set of rafters once because I forgot the actual size.

Welcome to the club, it's a classic rookie mistake! I've seen so many weekend projects come out a bit wobbly because of that. The lumber industry really loves its secret codes.
