Warning: my grocery budget doubled before I saw the pattern

I was spending around $400 a month on food for just me last year. Then over 6 months it crept up to almost $800 without me noticing. The difference was I stopped planning my meals and just bought whatever looked good at the store each day. That impulse shopping added up fast, especially with produce I never ended up eating. Once I started writing down exactly what I needed and stuck to a list, I got back to $450 in two months. Has anyone else had their budget jump like this from just skipping one habit?

Stop making grocery shopping a hobby and you'll save money. I noticed the same thing with my gas budget a while back. I used to just wander into the store whenever I felt like cooking something fun, but those random trips to the bakery section and the fancy cheese aisle killed my wallet. The real kicker is how this mindset creeps into other stuff too. Once I started meal prepping and only hitting the store once a week, I saved time and about 200 bucks a month.

200 bucks a month is no joke, that's real money. @taylor_barnes59 you're spot on about the mindset creeping into other stuff, I started buying bulk spices and fancy vinegars every trip thinking I'd use them all. Now I plan my meals around what's in my pantry first, not what looks good in the specialty aisle.
