Visited a dollar store in Phoenix and spotted a budgeting trap I almost fell for
I stopped into a Dollar Tree last week to grab some sponges for cleaning (you know, the cheap ones that fall apart in a week). But I noticed they had these big multi-packs of trash bags for $1.25 each, which seemed like a steal compared to the grocery store. Then I did the math on the square footage per bag, and you're actually getting like 40% less bag for your money than buying the value pack at Walmart. Has anyone else caught themselves oversaving on something that ended up costing more in the long run?

Yeah that trash bag thing is such a classic trap lol. I fell for the same deal once and ended up with bags that ripped if you looked at them wrong. Had a double bagged load of cat litter rip on my way to the trash can and that was a nightmare. The math on those dollar store bags is brutal when you actually break down cost per bag and how many you have to use to get the same job done. I started just buying the decent contractor bags from Home Depot and they last so much longer it actually saves money. The whole "cheaper upfront" mindset gets people every time.

Flip that math around and ask yourself what the real cost of those cheap bags is. You save a quarter upfront, but then you're hauling ripped trash across the driveway at 6am because the bag gave out. @josephf10 nailed it with the contractor bags tip. How many times have you bought something "cheap" and then had to replace it twice as fast, just to end up spending more and getting frustrated?
