Unpopular opinion: paying myself first on payday felt dumb for 3 weeks, then it saved me $1,400
I used to treat my checking account like a big pool and just hoped money was still there when bills hit. Back in January I started moving $175 into a separate savings account every Friday, the same day my paycheck lands. The first few weeks felt pointless since I was always pulling it back out by Wednesday. Then in March my car needed new brakes and instead of putting $620 on a card I just used the savings. I checked my statement and realized I had $1,400 sitting there without even feeling it leave my budget. The trick is the account has no debit card attached, so I have to wait 2 days to transfer it out. Has anyone else tried a delay like that, or do you just use a different bank entirely?
Sounds like you just got lucky with timing honestly. Brakes at 3 months in isn't exactly a stress test. Try that same system when rent and a medical bill hit the same week, then tell me how much you love it.
