Rant: the $9 expense tracker app I mocked for a year actually paid for itself in 3 weeks

I used to swear by my free spreadsheet in Austin, but then I kept forgetting to log my coffee runs and grocery grabs, so those $5 to $12 slips kept sneaking past me. I finally downloaded that cheap app after my coworker, Dana, said it auto-categorizes your bank feed, and it caught like $140 in small charges I'd never have tracked manually. Am I wrong for thinking paid tools are always a scam, or has anyone else been burned by the opposite, where free budgeting methods just cost you more in the end?
