Picked a manual mower over gas and saved $200 this season

I had to choose between a $400 gas mower or a $180 reel mower for my small lawn in Phoenix. I went with the manual one because I was tired of paying for gas and oil changes every month. It took me about 3 tries to get the hang of it without leaving lines of grass behind. Now I save about $40 a month on fuel and maintenance, and I get a little workout in. Has anyone else tried switching to a non-powered yard tool?

Did you ever accidentally scalp a patch of grass and convince yourself it's just "natural landscaping"? Asking for a friend who definitely didn't do that yesterday.

Yeah that's a solid move for the desert... I did the same thing last summer and haven't looked back once.
