My car's alternator gave out on the highway last Thursday
The tow alone was $150, but I called around and found a shop that did the repair for $400 instead of the $600 most places quoted. Has anyone else had a big surprise expense and found a way to cut the cost way down?

Found a shop that only charged $400? That's a crazy good deal for an alternator. Most places would see you stranded and just name a price. Really smart move calling around like that.

Yeah, a crazy good deal is right. More like a crazy "we didn't see you coming from a mile away" deal. Most shops hear "my car died" and just start adding zeros. Calling around is the only way to not get totally cleaned out. They bank on you being too stressed to think straight.
