I used to think the 'envelope system' was a waste of paper.
My partner and I were always over on our grocery budget by about $80 a month, so we started pulling that amount in cash and putting it in a real envelope. Seeing the money physically leave the envelope stopped us from adding extra snacks to the cart. Has anyone else found a simple physical trick that worked better than an app?

Wait, you were only over by eighty bucks? That's it? We blow our grocery budget by like two hundred every single month, easy. I'm shocked you got it under control that fast. We tried the envelope thing and just ended up digging into other envelopes when the food money was gone.

Ha! I read somewhere that the average person underestimates their grocery spending by like 40%. Knowing that doesn't help you stop it though. We switched to ordering pickup just so we couldn't impulse buy at the store, but then the app makes it way too easy to add stuff.

Oh the envelope system, where you get to feel the shame of physically moving money from the "electric bill" envelope to the "why did I buy fancy cheese" envelope. It's like a sad little game of fiscal musical chairs where the music always stops when you're out of snacks. We had to start hiding the fun money envelope from ourselves, like it was a bag of cookies.
