A guy at my credit union in Dayton looked at my spreadsheet and said I was budgeting fake money
Last Tuesday I sat down with a free advisor at my credit union in Dayton, mostly to ask about a car loan, and he asked to see how I track things. I pulled out my spreadsheet, proud of it, 14 tabs, color coded, the works. He scrolled for about 30 seconds and said "you're budgeting money you already spent." Turns out I was logging my card purchases on the day they hit my account, not the day I swiped, so for 3 or 4 days every week my "left to spend" number was flat out wrong. I had been making decisions off a number that was basically fiction, and I never caught it because it always evened out by Friday. He told me to just add a buffer line at the top for pending charges, one cell, that's it. I did it that night and my grocery budget finally stopped surprising me at the end of each month. My question is how do you all handle the gap between swiping and the charge clearing, do you log it right away or wait for the bank?
