That cheap hostel trick I overheard at a bus stop in Lisbon

I was waiting for the 28 tram and heard this backpacker telling her friend to book hostels for just 1 night then ask at the front desk for a cash discount on extending. Apparently places avoid booking fees and will cut 20% for direct deals. Tried it at a place in Porto last Friday and got 3 nights for the price of 2.5. Anyone else use this or is it gonna get me kicked out of a hostel someday?
