Showerthought: I picked a 12-hour bus over a flight to Mexico City in 2018.

Saved $220, met a local who gave me a free walking tour map, and slept surprisingly well. Anyone else find those long rides actually lead to better stories?

It's a nice story, but saving money and a free map isn't a life-changing event. Most long trips are just boring and uncomfortable. People tend to romanticize the small things to make the hassle feel worth it.

$20 and a free map, that's barely a happy hour in most cities. @grace926 has a solid point, why do we act like a little kindness is some massive life event? Doesn't it feel like people just slap a "profound" label on anything that isn't totally awful?

Used to agree, but that trip changed my mind.
