Rant: my $12 hostel padlock died in Lisbon and the front desk wanted 25 euros for a new one
Two weeks ago I was checking into a hostel in Lisbon and the cheap combo lock I'd used on three trips popped open and the shackle just would not go back in. I stood in the lobby for 20 minutes jiggling it while my bag sat unlocked on the floor, which felt like a great way to lose everything. The front desk guy quoted me 25 euros for a replacement from their little display case, so I walked four blocks to a neighborhood hardware shop and got one for 6 euros instead. Now I test any new lock at home before packing it, but I'm wondering if I should just skip locks and use the hostel's lockers with a keyed padlock instead. Has anyone found a lock brand that survives a couple of hostel trips without giving out?
