Rant: I kept track of every penny on a 9 day trip to Thailand and the number was $312
I wrote down every single purchase in a little notebook, mostly because my sister bet me I couldn't do a whole trip for under $500. Nine days in Chiang Mai and Pai, guesthouse beds, street food, one very questionable bus ride, all of it came to $312 total. The funny part is the thing that shocked me wasn't the total, it was that my airport snacks at home cost almost as much as 3 days of eating there. I ate like a king for $4 a meal while a sad sandwich at my layover set me back $14. Now I'm weirdly obsessed with tracking my normal life the same way, and it turns out I burn more cash on coffee in a normal work week. Does anyone else track their trips like this, or am I the only weirdo with a notebook?

Did you ever read that old book about a guy who tried to live on a dollar a day in Central America? I forget the title but the whole point was that the second you start writing stuff down, you notice things you'd never see otherwise. Same thing happened to me when I added up what I spend on lunch near my place, turns out it was way more than I thought. The airport snack thing is real though, I paid like 11 bucks for a water and a bag of trail mix last time I flew. Street food wins every time, both on taste and on my wallet.
