Picked a hostel over a hotel in Barcelona and saved 200 euros

Was deciding between a $50/night hostel in Gracia or a $150 hotel near Las Ramblas for my 5 day trip last spring. Ended up at the hostel and met a local who told me about a free walking tour that showed me all the hidden tapas spots. Has anyone else found that cheaper digs led to better local tips?

lol honestly I kinda have to disagree here. I did the hostel thing in Barcelona a couple years back and it was a nightmare. Shared a room with like 8 people and one guy snored so loud I could hear him through my earplugs. Plus I ended up spending all my savings on lockers and laundry and earplugs anyway so the savings were pretty much gone. You got lucky with the walking tour tip but I feel like most people just end up getting bad advice from drunk backpackers. Hotels have actual concierges who can give you real recommendations not just some guy at the bar. I'd rather pay extra for a decent night's sleep and not have to worry about my stuff getting stolen lol.
