Overheard a dude at a hostel say he saved $600 by booking flights at 3am

I was eating a sad instant noodle dinner in Bangkok last month and this guy next to me claimed airlines bump cheap seats at weird hours. He showed me his booking history on his phone, and sure enough, his 3am tickets were like half the price of my afternoon ones. Has anyone else tried this or is it just a myth from that one over-caffeinated traveler?

My 3am booking attempts usually end with me accidentally buying a one-way ticket to Cleveland instead of Tokyo, so I figure that's my own special tax for being half-asleep.

Oh man, that's rough. I've done similar stuff booking flights late at night. Ended up with a ticket to Detroit instead of Denver once. Now I always triple check the destination before I hit confirm.
