My sister told me to stop booking hotels in Lisbon and I'm glad I listened

We were planning a trip and she flat out said 'why are you paying 90 euros a night for a tiny room when you could stay with a local for free?' She showed me this site called TrustedHousesitters where you watch someone's pets and get their place. I tried it last month, got a full apartment with a balcony for a week in Lisbon for just the membership fee. Saved me over 600 euros. It felt way more real than a tourist hotel. Anyone else used a housesitting swap to cut costs in a big city?

What if you get stuck with a nightmare pet or a dirty place?

Yeah @diana55 that's the real worry, isn't it? Like what if the place is just GROSS and you're stuck cleaning for your whole trip? Do you just leave and lose all your money?

Totally, the "stuck cleaning" thing is REAL. Like @diana55 said, a nightmare pet is bad, but what if the place just smells weird and you find old food under the couch? You spend your first day just trying to make it livable. Then you're mad every time you walk in the door. It feels like you paid to be their free cleaner.
