My friend in Bangkok said my 'budget' hotel was a rip-off because I booked it from home.

Now I always walk in and ask for a room rate after I land, which saved me $30 a night last week and got me a better view.

That trick works in some places but it's a real gamble during peak season. I tried that in Tokyo last year and every decent hotel was fully booked for three days. Ended up paying way more for a last-minute place farther out. Booking ahead locks in the price and the room, which is worth the peace of mind sometimes.

My buddy tried that in Rome last summer. He landed without a booking and the first five places he checked were completely full. He ended up in a hostel dorm room for two nights, which was not the plan for his honeymoon.

Saw a blog post where someone saved money doing that in off-season Portugal though...
