My bus driver aunt clued me into sleeping on overnight coaches

I was complaining to my aunt Linda about hostel prices in Europe and she just laughed. She's been driving cross-country buses for 20 years and told me to book night buses between cities instead of paying for a bed. Saved me $60 on a trip from Barcelona to Madrid last month by sleeping on the coach. Has anyone else tried this for longer routes?
