My brother insisted I book a hostel in Lisbon for under $20 a night, and he was totally right.
I got a private room at 'The Independente' for $18 and met a group that showed me all the free fado spots. Anyone have a similar win with a specific city hostel?

Your brother might be onto something, but mine would probably send me to a sketchy basement for that price. Ngl, finding a private room under twenty bucks is a legendary move. Miles_roberts22 is right about the local tips, but sometimes you just get lucky with the random crew in the common room. Had a similar thing in Prague where the hostel bartender drew a map to all the cheap beer gardens tourists never find.
