My backpack buckle broke on day 2 of a 10-day trip in Thailand

I was in Chiang Mai and the chest strap buckle on my Osprey snapped clean off while I was walking to the bus station. I had to use a zip tie from a street vendor to hold it together for the rest of the trip. Has anyone else had a piece of gear fail in the middle of nowhere and had to MacGyver a fix?

Logan's point about Chiang Mai being inland is accurate, but that doesn't change the fact that a busted chest strap on day two of a ten-day trip is still a real annoyance regardless of location. The street vendor zip tie fix was actually clever, and the whole point is that gear failing at any point on a long trip forces you to problem solve on the fly. Middle of nowhere or not, the core issue is the same: you're stuck with a broken piece of essential gear and have to figure it out yourself.

Yeah Chiang Mai is inland, it's definitely not "in the middle of nowhere" though.
