My $8 airport blanket from Costco now sets off every scanner
Flew out of Denver last month and grabbed one of those cheap packing blankets from Costco before my trip to keep in my carry-on for cold plane rides. Paid $8 for it, figured it was a solid budget hack. Got to security in Salt Lake City on the way back and the TSA pulled me aside because the blanket showed up as a weird dense mass on the X-ray. They swabbed it, asked me where I got it, and I had to explain it was just a fleece throw for the red-eye. Turns out the blanket has some kind of thermal lining that reads like a solid block on the scanner. The agent laughed and said they see it all the time with cheap camping gear. Now I just wear it as a scarf through security to avoid the hassle. Has anyone else had random $10 items trigger the full pat-down routine? I feel like the savings are getting cancelled out by the extra 20 minutes at the checkpoint.
