Just learned that flying out of smaller airports can save $150+ per ticket

I was looking at flights to Nashville next month and noticed that flying from my local airport instead of the big international one an hour away was actually $165 cheaper per person. Airfarewatchdog had an article about this where they compared 20 routes and found smaller airports averaged 30% less in fares. Anyone else found deals flying out of regional airports instead of the big hubs?

The "30% less" figure is a little misleading actually... Airfarewatchdog compared two very specific types of airports to get that number, not a random mix. They mostly looked at airports that are already served by budget carriers like Allegiant and Frontier, which keeps base fares low. So a regional airport served by a big carrier might not give you that same 30% discount. Still, saving $150+ is a real deal if the smaller airport has a budget airline on your route.

Honestly yeah, I saved like $200 flying out of a smaller airport near me for a trip to Chicago last year. Totally worth the extra 15 minute drive to get there.
