I was a hostel snob until I stayed at a $15/night guesthouse in Chiang Mai

I used to think hostels were the only way to save money on lodging, but I gave a small guesthouse a try in Thailand last month. For $15 a night I got a private room with AC and free breakfast, way better than the $12 dorm bunk I had at a nearby hostel. The owner even gave me a map with cheap local food spots she drew herself. Has anyone else found guesthouses beating hostels in certain places?

Totally get this, those guesthouse owners really know the good spots.

Bet they charge double for that "local knowledge" though. Name one spot that doesn't come with a side of overpriced coffee.
