I thought packing cubes were a waste of money until my trip to Lisbon

I used to just stuff everything into my backpack, but my friend lent me her set for a 5-day trip and I fit three extra outfits in the same space. It was the difference between paying for a carry-on or just taking a personal item on the budget airline. Has anyone else had a simple gear change that saved a bunch on bag fees?

Wait, three extra outfits? That sounds impossible. My packing cubes barely save any space at all.

The trick is rolling clothes tight before putting them in the cubes, Simon. I used to just stuff things in and it barely made a difference. You have to fold each item into a tight bundle first, then pack those bundles in the cube. It compresses everything down so much more. That's how I fit those extra outfits in my carry-on last trip.
